| rhys | 2008-12-17 12:30:12 UTC brilliant episode. you would’ve thought that the fife dieters would have noticed that the fife diet’s good ol’ ‘pillars of hercules’ veggies were not from fife. Oh, forgive me. there was Cale, Pak Choi, and cabbage. Maybe it’s just the same as the herbal teas, and is just “Hippie Crap” | |
| Jean-Loup | 2008-12-17 15:23:35 UTC Umm, Hugh, every time you put “medieval” and “potatoes” in the same sentence it makes me cringe… ;) | |
| pajh | 2008-12-17 15:39:11 UTC To be fair to Hugh, in this one instance he was talking about “medieval” and the absence of potatoes. | |
| Hugh | 2008-12-17 17:15:19 UTC Fair point, JL. My only defence is that I was using the term in a colloquial rather than, say, accurate sense. | |
| Ross | 2008-12-17 22:57:34 UTC Looking forward to this lot, especially as I live in Fife. There’s another local farm shop near Elie. Been meaning to go for a while now – http://www.ardrossfarm.co.uk/ | |
| Leah | 2008-12-18 00:53:04 UTC I’m going to really enjoy watching these. Though I have to reiterate that the places at the Edinburgh farmers market are likely about as equidistant or close to it from Edinburgh as Fife is, and you could actually do better (especially with your carbon footprint) by buying from there exclusively instead of venturing to Fife. I’m sure people from the same places brought in foods during the middle ages (albeit with horses). The point of the “Fife Diet” is not that it’s in Fife, but that it’s local or more local food. Still, this set of videos is going to be very amusing. :) | |
| Mark Sutherland | 2008-12-18 23:57:09 UTC Re: Google Maps EULA does this mean Google own you now? :) I’m guessing you’re not expecting them to be complaining any time soon? Also, stab wounds and accountants ftl. Good work guys :) | |
| Hugh | 2008-12-19 11:11:06 UTC Mark – Check the Maps EULA out – it’s awesome. “Want to use our maps for anything Internetty? Fine, credit us. Want to use them in the press? Fine, credit us. Want to use them in broadcast, for a one-off? Fine…” Leah – To quickly summarise – there’s been a thing called “The Fife Diet” in the news. It’s food and it’s local, so we thought we’d do a piece on it and see whether it’s all it’s cracked up to be. Hence, we have to follow a diet with food from Fife, because doing a piece on the Fife Diet by eating foods from Edinburgh would have been rather unfair. If there had been an “Edinburgh Diet” that was being hailed as the best thing since fried kale, we’d have cheerfully tested that instead, but there isn’t. | |
| SpudTater | 2008-12-20 13:15:14 UTC What happened to zero-indexing? | |
| pajh | 2008-12-20 15:13:26 UTC It’s a different data structure. Specifically, a single two-part episode doesn’t require a variable-length array. | |
| The Bohemian Reject | 2008-12-20 20:44:49 UTC I found this utterly delightful. Good work guys. I’m from Vancouver so I’m very familiar with the 100 mile diet. Here we have the rich orchards of the Okenagan, as well as great fishing from the Ocean. It’s a lot easier and tastier for us to shop locally than I’m sure it is for the good people of Fife. I also just wanted to share a Ted Talk on the humane treatment of geese for foie gras. I thought it might interest you guys. Goose Whispering. Seriously. http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/dan_barber_s_surprising_foie_gras_parable.html | |
| Ian | 2008-12-20 23:11:29 UTC One thing that struck me was the “very little alcohol” statement at the very end. Are there no Fife-based breweries? I’m in the US, so maybe my viewpoint is skewed, but we have micro-breweries in most major cities that are more than capable of supplying a week’s worth of booze. Maybe the issue is that the Fife brewers use imported grains, hops, etc? A week without bread!?! I don’t envy what you guys have done for science! | |
| Hugh | 2008-12-21 11:45:21 UTC Ian – it’s pretty startling, but neither our research nor that of the Fife Diet had turned up any Fife-based alcohol suppliers – and that’s without even getting into the “where does the grain/hops come from?” issue. There was a distillery opening, as I recall, but it hadn’t opened at time of writing. TBR – Having been to Vancouver last year (great city), I’ve got to say that I probably wouldn’t object to living on the local produce either! I could go a couple of weeks just on your scallops before my wallet ran out. TED talk – thanks, that’s interesting. We’re considering Foie Gras for treatment in Series 1 – it’s a really interesting subject. |
The Fife Diet - Part 1
